The famous love story on a doomed ocean liner, a vengeful gladiator’s duels, and a British secret agent’s missions go hand in hand with some of the best film scores of all time. Iconic characters live on in every note and the act of making music for film has established itself as an art form in its own right. And thus, a new concert experience appeared—tributes featuring songs from movies, TV series, video games, and more.
Some movies work really well with music from Bach or Mahler that existed long before the film, so music has its own autonomy. – Ennio Morricone

Sense of time and place
Singin’ in the Rain is full of cheerful melodies that remind us we’re watching a musical. They also easily transport audiences to the 1920s with every upbeat note marking the arrival of the “talkies”. On the other hand, watching Bridgerton, a series filmed in the 21st century and with more modernized elements, it is easier to feel like you’re in the 1800s with the sound of classical ensembles.
Mood and atmosphere
If something bad has happened, cue the baleful and doomy music. And when the couple gets their happily ever after, a grand opus should play in celebration. These are the kinds of things that set the mood and atmosphere in movies and series. Breaking Bad wouldn’t be as sinister without its original theme song and Saturday Night Fever is all about the disco.
A Fun Film Score Fact
Italian composer Ennio Morricone wrote his scores by hand instead of using a form of computer scoring. A choice also made by American composer John Williams.
