What do you think of when someone mentions Gastonia? If you’re familiar with the area, you sure wouldn’t picture this.
The tik-tok shows a quaint, charming little city at the base of snow-capped mountains with the location tag claiming the town is Gastonia, North Carolina. Those familiar with Gastonia would be able to tell, and those who read the top comments would see that the actual location was Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland.
For one Florida woman, Olivai Garcia, who wasn’t familiar with the area, the Tik Tok was enough to convince her to detour 1 hour out of the way to Gastonia while on a road trip with family from Jupiter, Florida to Angel Oak Park in Charleston, South Carolina.
The random road trip to Gastonia revealed that the Swiss city was not actually in North Carolina, and spurred a video in response by Garcia that shows the actual Gastonia, warts and all. According to the Charlotte Observer, Garcia said she knew something was off about 20 minutes into the drive. The videos were all in good fun, and there are no hard feelings.
The Tiktoker in question, Zachary Keese, has an entire series of videos where beautiful European destinations are labeled as smaller Carolina towns. One video of the Duomo in Milan, Italy is labeled as “Concord Mills Mall, near Charlotte” and what looks to be Postiano, Italy as Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina.
What do you think of this content? All in good fun, or mean-spirited?
