What is “We Call It Tango”?
Over the course of 60 mesmerizing minutes, “We Call It Tango” transports audiences to the vibrant dance halls and bustling streets of Buenos Aires for an evening charged with intensity, passion and magic. The show tells the story of Amelia, a gifted dancer who falls in love with the milonga (a type of tango). As audiences are fully immersed in the magic of the dance over three acts and 13 tangos, they uncover the secrets of this unspoken language that’s communicated through intense footwork, intimate movements and music.
Tango, its music, and the show
Tango was born in the streets of Buenos Aires in the 1880s. Residents living in the working-class areas of the city would come together to dance and twirl to moving melodies and stirring sounds that we know today as tango music. The dance itself originates from a fusion of other dances from around the world, including the Spanish-Cuban Habanera and the Uruguayan Candombe.
Iconic tango songs by the likes of Astor Piazzolla, Juan D’Arienzo and Ángel Villoldo will be played on the night by brilliant musicians, while a tango dance duo performs enganches (passionate leg wraps), amagues (precise flicks of the feet) and more.
